By allowing Kezia to open the gate to Lil and Else, Mansfield may be suggesting that likewise, Kezia is removing any obstruction or social prejudice essat Lil and Else, so that both can be just like the other children in the story, to be their equal. Then the reason it is effective is because for the first time in the story the Kelvey girls are being accepted and included by one latherine their peers Kezia.
